After leading the University of Hawai'i women's water polo team to its third Big West Championship in five years and its first appearance to the NCAAs since the 2015 season, senior
Irene Gonzalez and junior counterpart
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie were named to the ACWPC Division I All-America Team.
Gonzalez became the first Rainbow Wahine to earn four ACWPC All-American selections and her second consecutive first-team accolade, while Lemay-Lavoie garnered her first All-American status, securing second-team honors.
The two-time reigning Big West Player of the year, Gonzalez was a force on both sides of the pool, registering 60 goals and 26 assists, while accounting for 38 steals and 10 field blocks on the season. She produced 15 multi-goal games and tied a career-high with six goals two times this season. She tallied six goals, drew two exclusions, added two steals and two field blocks to lead UH to victory over UC Davis at the Big West Tournament.
The Barcelona, Spain native leaves Mānoa with her name all over the UH record book. She finished her career No. 1 all-time at UH in career goals per match (2.31), No. 3 in goals (226), No. 5 in steals (160) and No. 6 in assists (91).
In only 18 games played this season, Lemay-Lavoie proved to be a vital asset to the Rainbow Wahine team. The Big West first-team honoree posted 53 goals on 80 attempts, setting a new single-season record for field goal percentage at 66.3 percent. She recorded 14 multi-goal games, including setting career-marks, scoring six goals against No. 4 Cal two times this season.
This marks the 22nd straight year that at least one UH player has earned All-American distinction with 16 citations coming under eighth-year head coach
Maureen Cole.
