Water Polo Closes Regular Season at Home on Senior Night

HONOLULU - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team gears up for its last regular season game, hosting No. 11 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 13 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The first sprint is slated for 6:00 p.m. HT.

Following the game, the Rainbow Wahine will honor Femke Aan, Carla Abellan, Irene Gonzalez and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie with a senior night ceremony. Over the last four seasons, the senior class has helped UH compile a 71-29 overall record.

Last week, Hawai'i (15-5, 3-1 Big West) split a pair of Big West Conference games on the road, first falling to No. 8 UC Irvine by one goal, 7-6, last Friday. Continuing their road swing, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back, earning a convincing, 15-7, win over No. 12 Long Beach State last Sunday.  UH used a balanced offensive attack that saw eight different players enter the scoring column.

In 20 games this season, Irene Gonzalez paces the 'Bows on both ends of the pool, scoring 50 goals and dishing out 24 assists, while racking up 30 steals. Freshman Maxine Schaap and Lemay-Lavoie have also guided the 'Bows, each putting through 38 goals on the season.

In last year's contest, the Rainbow Wahine defeated the Gauchos, 11-4.

Hawai'i is 25-8 all-time against UC Santa Barbara, with the 'Bows winning the last two meetings.

Over her career, Gonzalez solidified her name in UH's all-time record book and continues to move up. She currently ranks third all-time in goals (216), sixth in assist (89) and fifth in steals (152). In her 100 career games, Aan has tallied 142 goals, while Abellan has put up 52 goals in her 98 career games. Wrapping up her second season with the Rainbow Wahine, Lemay-Lavoie has totaled 79 goals in 36 career games.
