Rainbow Wahine Use Balanced Attack To Triumph Over No. 12 Long Beach State

Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. - Using a balanced attack, the fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team triumphed over No. 12 Long Beach State by a 15-7 score on Sunday at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.

Led by Irene Gonzalez's four goals, Hawai'i (15-5, 3-1 Big West) saw eight different players enter the scoring column. For Long Beach State (15-12, 1-2), Marilia Eleni Mimidi put in two goals and added one assist.

From the opening possession, the Rainbow Wahine's offense clicked, connecting on their first three shot attempts, starting the game 3-0. Gonzalez, Maxine Schaap and Femke Aan each netted a score. To close the period, the 49ers tallied a pair of goals to keep Hawai'i in reach.

The Rainbow Wahine traded goals with the 49ers to start the second frame, with UH ahead by narrow margin, 5-4, at the 4:45 mark. From this point on the 'Bows took control on both ends of the pool, offensively and defensively. As the second quarter came to a close, Gonzalez and Alba Bonamusa Boix both found the back of the net to extend the lead at the half.

Hawai'i defense held off Long Beach State, notching seven steals in the match, while blanking the opposition in the third frame. The 'Bows added three more goals by Schaap, Emma van Rossum and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie.

In the final eight minutes, Gonzalez connected on her fourth goal to cap off a 6-0 scoring run before Long Beach State stopped the bleeding. The Rainbow Wahine scored five goals from five different players in the period to hold off Long Beach State.

Bridget Layburn made four saves in the first half before Molly DiLalla tallied five saves in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine return home for their final regular season game, hosting No. 11 UC Santa Barbara on Apr. 13 at home, with the first sprint at 6:00 p.m. HT. After the game, Hawai'i will take part in a senior night ceremony for Aan, Gonzalez, Lemay-Lavoie and Carla Abellan.
