Box Score LONG BEACH - The second-seeded University of Hawai'i women's water polo team earned a 14-7 win over third-seeded UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center in Long Beach, Calif., during the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament.
Irene Gonzalez came up big for Hawai'i, tying a career-high and a Big West Tournament single-game record with six goals.
With the win, the Rainbow Wahine (17-5) secured a spot in the BWC Championship game to face top-seeded UC Irvine for the second-consecutive season.
In the opening period, Hawai'i got off to a quick start, with Gonzalez stringing a pair of goals to pace the Rainbow Wahine.
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie followed suit, adding another UH goal, forcing a timeout for UC Davis (18-12). The Aggies responded, closing the period on a 2-0 scoring run.
The Rainbow Wahine's hot shooting continued in the second quarter, scoring three-straight goals to push the lead to 6-2. Yet again, the Aggies finished the quarter strong, scoring two late goals to close the margin, 6-4, heading into halftime.
As the game went on, Hawai'i's offense proved too much, outscoring the Aggies, 8-3, in the second half. UH started the third quarter connecting on all cylinders, with
Maxine Schaap scoring 13 seconds into the period. The Rainbow Wahine would engineer a total of five goals in the frame and never looked back.
Over the final eight minutes, Hawai'i extended its lead, scoring three more goals to stave off the Aggies.
In addition to Gonzalez's six goals, Schaap, Lemay-Lavoie and
Carmen Baringo all tallied two goals apiece with
Emma van Rossum and
Lalelei Mata'afa also scoring for the Rainbow Wahine.
In the cage,
Molly DiLalla put together a solid outing, recording five saves and one steal.
The Rainbow Wahine will gear up for their second-straight appearance in the championship game with a rematch against top-seeded UC Irvine, Sunday, April 28 at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. First sprint is slated for 2:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT).
