Softball Travels To Take On Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i softball team (21-10, 2-1 Big West) heads to California on their second roadtrip of the season to take on Cal Poly in a three-game conference series this weekend. The Rainbow Wahine will play a single game against the Mustangs on Friday, April 5 at 2:00 pm HT, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 starting at 10:00 am HT. All three games will be played at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Series History: Hawai'i leads the series against Cal Poly, 13-9. Last year, UH swept the Mustangs in Honolulu. The 'Bows have won the last three games.

Game Notes: 
  • Hawai'i is coming of a 2-1 series win over Long Beach State this past weekend. For UH, it marked their first series win over the 49ers since 1995. Hawai'i won the opener, 4-1 but fell in the second game 5-2. UH closed the series with a mercy-rule, six inning win, 11-3 over LBSU to seal the series win. Senior pitcher Brittany Hitchcock earned both wins for the 'Bows in the pitching circle.
  • UH just ended a 23-game homestand and their trip to Cal Poly marks their second roadtrip of the season.
  • The Rainbow Wahine are off to its best start since 2013 when the 'Bows started the year at 20-7. That was UH's first year back in the Big West Conference
  • Hawaii has outscored their opponents in the first inning alone, 46-to-8. Overall the Wahine's offense has outscored their opponents overall 158-to-113. UH is 15-0 when holding opponents to 2-or-less runs. 
  • Currently, Hawai'i leads the league in home runs per game (1.10), scoring (5.10 runs/game), and slugging percentage (.456) The 'Bows are also ranked first in the league in double plays per game by the defense (.52). Their home run total is ranked No. 17 in the NCAA.
  • Through just 31 games, UH has already drilled 34 home runs, matching the team total for all of last season. For Hawai'i, 50 of UH's 158 runs have resulted off their home runs. UH has hit eight home runs to lead off the inning. Nine different Rainbow Wahine have already hit at least one home run this season. Nicole Lopez and Callee Heen's are tied with a team-high 10 homers each which is tops in the Big West right now. Overall both are ranked No. 40 in the NCAA in homers. 
  • Junior first baseman/catcher Callee Heen hit .444 this past week against the 49ers to take over the team-lead with a .390 batting average. She hit safely in all three games against LBSU--including a walk-off, solo home run to end the series in a six-inning mercy rule victory. Heen also leads UH with 29 RBI, 16 walks and a .495 on-base percentage and a .793 slugging percentage. Heen also leads UH with 10 multiple-RBI games this season.
  • Senior third baseman Nicole Lopez cooled off a little at the plate against the 49ers this past week, but she continues to lead UH with 33 runs, 40 hits, eight doubles, 10 home runs, and 78 total bases. She leads the Big West in runs scored per game (1.06). Overall she is hitting .388 and she also leads UH with 12 multiple-hit games.
  • Senior pitcher Brittany Hitchcock returned after suffering a season-ending injury early last season and was granted a record-sixth year of eligibility. Last weekend, Hitchcock earned both of UH's wins over Long Beach State with a pair of complete game efforts. She improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in conference. Overall she lowered her ERA to 2.03 in 93.0 innings pitched. She has 11 complete games this season. Hitchcock has walked just 20 while striking out 78 opposing hitters. She is ranked NO. 2 in the BWC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.90) and No. 4 in the Big West in strikeouts.
  • Head coach Bob Coolen is currently just SIX games away from reaching the 1,000 win milestone at Hawai'i. Coolen, who is in his 28th season at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program, currently has a 994-608-1 record at UH and a 1,066-701-1 overall record in 32 seasons overall. He spent his first two seasons here as an assistant coach under then-head coach Rayla Allison. Coolen will join an elite group of UH coaches who have all earned 1,000 wins at the University of Hawai'i. Former men's and women's tennis coach Jim Schwitters earned 1,327 career victories during his 38-year career. Former women's volleyball head coach Dave Shoji recorded 1,202 wins during his 42-year career. Former UH baseball coach Les Murakami earned 1,079 total wins in his 30-year career at UH.
