HONOLULU - The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team heads back to California for their final regular season road trip which includes a pair of Big West Conference games against No. 10 UC Irvine (Apr. 5) and No. 12 Long Beach State (Apr. 7).
Freshman
Maxine Schaap's go-ahead goal with 1:19 remaining lifted the Rainbow Wahine to a 6-5 victory over fourth-ranked Cal on Friday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The 'Bows picked up their first win over the Golden Bears this season (previously 0-2), and first win since the 2016 season.
In 18 games played this season, senior attacker
Irene Gonzalez paces UH's offensive attack, leading the BWC in points per game at 3.78, registering second-best 2.50 goals per game and 1.46 assist per game.
Last season in their last outing against the Anteaters, the Rainbow Wahine suffered a heartbreaking triple overtime defeat during the BWC championships, falling by an 8-7 score.
In their last matchup versus Long Beach State a season ago, Hawai'i defeated the 49ers in the BWC semifinals, 9-6. Gonzalez finished with three goals, two assist and three steals.
All-time, Hawai'i is 18-10 against UC Irvine and 26-7 against Long Beach State.
Following the road swing, the Rainbow Wahine will close out the regular season at the Duke Kahanamoku Complex for Senior Night against UC Santa Barbara on April 13.
