HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (5-8, 0-0 Big West) was edged out by Grand Canyon, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
The 'Lopes won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. UH's No. 3 duo of
Asad Siyyid and
Chia-Hua Lu fell to Lucas Grego and Freddie Grandt, 6-3. GCU's No. 2 Valentin Lang and Jakub Novak defeated
Blaz Seric and Simao Telo Alves by a break, 6-4.
Siyyid lost his match on the No. 6 court to Grego, 6-3 to start singles. UH's No. 2
Lucas Labrunie then held on to knock off Mathieu Rajaonah, 6-0, 7-6 (2) to trail in the match 2-1. But then GCU took the next two matches to clinch the match with wins on the No. 4 and No. 1 courts. Hawai'i's No. 3 Seric then battled for a three-set win over Lang, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 and
Tristan Martins outlasted Grant in a marathon, third set, super tiebreaker on the No. 5 court, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (16).
The Rainbow Warriors now have 14 days off before they hit the road take on Sonoma State on Sunday March 31 and open their Big West Conference season on April 2 at UC Davis.
