HONOLULU – In the annual Alumni Game to unofficially kick off the 2019 season, the current University of Hawaiʻi baseball team earned a 20-5 victory over the alumni on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Dylan Thomas pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts in the start for the current Rainbow Warriors with
Colin Ashworth,
Carter Loewen and
Scott Bellina also seeing time on the mound on the day. The offense for the current Rainbow Warriors was highlighted by two inside-the-park home runs off the bat of
Jacob Sniffin.
The current team sprinted out to a 9-0 lead through three innings, aided by a seven-run second inning.
The alumni squad was able to storm back with five runs in the top of the seventh thanks to sacrifice flies from Ken Mackenzie and Kaeo Aliviado, a pair of RBIs from Kalei Hanawahine and another from Darwin Nazarino.
Six more runs from the current 'Bows in the bottom of the seventh broke the game wide open. A ground-rule double from
Adam Fogel and a two-run single courtesy of
Alex Baeza led the way in the inning.
Scotty Scott hit an RBI triple and Sniffin hit his second inside-the-park home run to highlight the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to 20-5.
UH Baseball will host the Grand Slam Celebration tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The season opener is slated for Friday, Feb. 15 at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium versus Portland.
