Rainbow Wahine Take Down No. 21 UC San Diego, 10-7

Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. - Aided by a fast start, the fifth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi women's water polo team earned a 10-7 road win over 21st-ranked UC San Diego at the Canyonview Aquatic Center on Sunday.

UH (7-1) scored five of the game's first six goals on Sunday to build up an insurmountable lead. The victory helps the Rainbow Wahine cap their four-game road swing with a 3-1 mark over the weekend.

Senior All-American Irene Gonzalez scored three goals for the 'Bows, while Elyse Lemay-Lavoie, Femke Aan and Carmen Baringo added two goals apiece.

After the strong start, UH took a 5-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Action went back and forth in the second half with UC San Diego cutting the UH advantage down to just two on three occasions. In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, Baringo and Samantha Malouff found the back of the net for the Rainbow Wahine to put the game away.

UH connected for 10 goals on 24 attempts (41.6 percent), while UC San Diego was 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) on its attempts.

With the win, Hawaiʻi improves to 24-3 in the all-time series versus UC San Diego.

Up next, UH will head to the Azusa, Calif. to take on Azusa Pacific on Feb. 20.
