Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. - On day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, the fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split a pair of games at the UC Irvine Aquatic Complex.
In the first contest, the Rainbow Wahine (10-2) got off to a slow start and fell short against fourth-ranked California, 12-10. Hawai'i regrouped quickly for a rematch from a Jan. 26 battle with eighth-ranked Arizona State, securing a 10-8 win over the Sun Devils on Saturday.

Senior All-American
Irene Gonzalez netted a game-high five goals, but the Rainbow Wahine fell just short by a 12-10 final score to the fourth-ranked California Golden Bears (9-1).
In the opening quarter, the Golden Bears came out of the gates firing, scoring three straight goals before UH could respond. Hawai'i turned to Gonzalez to fuel the offense, finishing the quarter on a 3-1 run – two goals from Gonzalez and one from
Carmen Baringo.
Cal's Emma Wright started the second quarter finding the back of the net for her third goal of the game, giving Cal a 5-3 advantage. With plenty of time, UH would stir in a trio of goals, while limiting Cal to just one.
With the score knotted at six apiece, Hawai'i looked to take advantage entering the third quarter. Junior
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie netted a goal in the opening possession, giving the Rainbow Wahine their first lead of the match, 7-6. In a game of runs, California would score the next three goals to UH's one.
In the final eight minutes, Cal extended its lead by three scores, 11-8. UH's Gonzalez and
Maxine Schaap strung together a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough as Wright scored her fourth goal to put Hawai'i away.
#5 Hawai'i 10 - #8 Arizona State 8
In the second match of the day, the Rainbow Wahine got a bounce-back win over eighth-ranked Arizona State (9-5), 10-8.
Leading the charge, Lemay-Lavoie notched her second hat trick of the season, while Baringo followed suit tallying two goals.
Hawai'i used a flurry of goals in the opening frame, scoring five times to set the pace.
Emma van Rossum, Baringo and Schaap netted three straight to open the contest. Arizona State's Lieke Rogge and Viktoria Orloova put in two goals before Lemay-Lavoie and
Bernadette Doyle added one goal each to close the quarter, 5-2.
In the second quarter, the Sun Devils would strike first but UH's offense kept clicking, scoring three goals to extend their lead by five goals, 8-3.
The Rainbow Wahine added one goal by senior
Femke Aan to give Hawai'i its largest lead of the match in the third quarter, 9-3.
Arizona State would not go away, going on a 5-1 surge to cut into UH's lead.
In the cage,
Bridget Layburn notched a career-high 10 blocks.
The Barbara Kalbus Invitational concludes tomorrow with UH taking on Pacific.
