Hawai‘i Sits Atop MPSF Championship Standings After Day Three

The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team turned in its third consecutive stellar day of competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships as both the men's and women's added to their leads.

With one day left to go, the men sit ahead of UC Santa Barbara in the rankings at 297.5 to 234, while the women surged ahead of UC Davis 538 to 392. If both teams maintain their leads, it'll mark the men's first-ever MPSF title and the women's third straight championship.

LA MIRADA, CALIF.— Going into the day both the men's and women's team held first-place spots and Friday proved to be a day of more addition than subtraction.

"Talon's (Lindquist) win and meet/school record in the 400 individual medley was amazing," said head coach Dan Schemmel. "It lit the fire for the group, resulting in people stepping up all over the place. Phoebe Hine's 200 free was stellar, as was Metin Aydin's 100 back, Kionna Clayton's 100 breast, Lucia Lassman's 100 fly and Karolina Hajkova's 100 back. Metin (Aydin) has been the backbone of this team for three years, and he's having a great meet. We're looking forward to tomorrow!

All in all UH finished the day with eight first-place finishes, including two relay and six individual wins. The Rainbow Wahine claimed five as the Rainbow Warriors notched three.

Sophomore Lucia Lassman began the day strong for the Wahine taking the No. 1 spot of the 100 butterfly, touching the wall at 53.04, finishing a second faster than the second place participant. Junior Phoebe Hines eclipsed her season-best in the 200 free with her first-place finish at 1:45.68.

The sophomore tandem of Kionna Clayton and Karolina Hajkova collected wins in the 100 breast and the 100 back, but would also team up with Lassman, and senior Bryndis Hansen for a win in the 400 medley relay.

For the men, freshman Talon Lindquist collected one of the most significant wins of his young career, as he shattered his previous best in the 400 individual medley by nine seconds. Lindquist collected a time of 3:46.81, and bested senior Metin Aydin's previous team-high time of 3:51.44.

Aydin made his statement on the day narrowly beating teammate, junior Kane Follows in the 100 back with a time of 46.23 and surpassed the season-best time in the event.

The duo of Aydin and Follows teamed up with junior David Springhetti and junior Mateusz Chaba to finish the day with a win in the 400 medley relay and eclipsed the previous season-best in the event at 3:09.55.
