Water Polo Earns 13-7 Road Win at No. 25 Azusa Pacific

Box Score GLENDORA, Calif. - Powered by five goals from Elyse Lemay-Lavoie and four from Maxine Schaap, the fifth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi women's water polo team secured a 13-7 road victory over 25th-ranked Azusa Pacific on Wednesday.

For Hawaiʻi (8-1), which was competing for the first time since Feb. 3, it was the team's seventh victory over a ranked opponent this season. The five goals for Lemay-Lavoie tie a career high, while freshman Bridget Layburn made a season-best eight saves for UH.

Schaap scored twice in the first quarter as Hawaiʻi took a 2-1 lead into the first break. The 'Bows exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Azusa Pacific (5-8) by a 6-2 mark to extend the advantage to 8-3. Lemay-Lavoie tallied three of her five goals in the second quarter.

The second half went back and forth with UH outscoring Azusa Pacific, 5-4, over the final 16 minutes.

On the offensive end, the Rainbow Wahine also received one goal apiece from Emma van Rossum, Femke Aan, Lalelei Mata'afa and Irene Gonzalez. The 'Bows converted on 13 of their 27 attempts, while Azusa Pacific made seven of its 25 attempts.

APU's Hannah Bradley led the home side with three goals on the day.

The Rainbow Wahine will now head to Irvine, Calif. to compete in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational scheduled for Feb. 22-24. The 'Bows begin the action on Feb. 22 versus San Jose State.
