Water Polo Falls at No. 3 UCLA, 12-8

Box Score LOS ANGELES - In the first road game of the year, the fifth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi women's water polo team was handed a 12-8 loss by third-ranked UCLA on Friday evening at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif. For the Rainbow Wahine (4-1), it was their first defeat of the season.

Making her season debut, junior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie tallied two goals to go with two more from freshman Alba Bonamusa Boix to lead the UH offense.

UCLA (8-0) sprinted out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Maddie Mussleman, who put up a game-high five goals for the home side, scored twice in the first quarter for the Bruins.

UH got on the board with second quarter goals courtesy of Lemay-Lavoie and Maxine Schaap, but UCLA was able to take a 7-2 advantage into halftime.

Hawaiʻi picked up its offensive attack in the second half, outscoring the Bruins 6-5 over the final 16 minutes of the contest. After trailing by as many as six goals in the second half, the 'Bows cut the UCLA advantage down to four goals on four occasions but could not complete the comeback.

Reigning Big West Player of the Week Irene Gonzalez continued her goals streak with one on Friday. The senior has scored in every game this season.

The Rainbow Wahine will look to bounce back tomorrow with two more games at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center. UH will take on No. 15 Loyola Marymount at 11:00 a.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT) and No. 14 Fresno State at 12:15 p.m. PT (10:15 a.m. HT).
