Softball Overwhelms Fullerton College, 13-0

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team overpowered Fullerton College in the last two innings to down the Hornets, 13-0 on Day 2 of the Fall Preseason Classic. Hawai'i relief pitcher Jetta Nannen earned the win while the 'Bows got a power surge from Brittnee Rossi, Nawai Kaupe and Callee Heen who all launched home runs to help power past the Hornets on Saturday afternoon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

In all, four Hawai'i pitchers combined on the two-hit shutout against Fullerton College. The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings. For Hawai'i, Ashley Murphy got the start and threw three shutout innings. She allowed one  hit and had five walks with a strikeout but was able to get out of jams. Nannen threw the next two innings, giving up one hit. Emily Klee and Dominique Martines both threw one inning each.

In the bottom of the fifth, both Ka'ena Keliinoi and Samantha Thomas were hit by pitch. Rossi then lifted a two out, three-run home run over the right-centerfield fence. Nawai Kaupe followed by hitting a bomb over the left-field netting onto the roof of the batting cage shed roof to give UH a 4-0 lead.

The floodgates opened in the sixth inning as UH batted around the order and scored nine runs. Haylee Clay started the inning with a double to the right-center gap. After a ground out to short, Ellie Suh reached on a single to put runners at the corners. Madison Ayers then hit a ground ball to short, but the shortstop tried to eliminate the lead runner…instead Clay scored and Suh advanced to second. Maya Nakamura then lacec a single to left to load the bases. Hawai'i then linked five-straight hits to keep the rally going. Bree Soma rapped a single to right that drove in a run. Kawai Mielke then drove in Ayers with a single to rightfirld and Lepepaina Matavao hit a single to left to score both Soma and Nakamura. Merilis "Mama" River then tested the limits of the ballpark with a double to the fence to add another two runs as both Matavao and Mielke crossed the plate. Heen then drove a home run over the rightfield fence to cap the scoring. In all, the Hawai'i offense racked up 13 runs on 11 hits with 12 RBI for the scoring onslaught—all in the last two innings.
