Box Score HONOLULU - In a battle of top 10 teams, the seventh-ranked University of Hawai'i water polo team earned a hard-fought 10-7 victory over the fifth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
For UH, which remains undefeated at 4-0 on the season, senior
Irene Gonzalez notched her fourth straight game with at least three goals, finishing with four scores, two assists and one steal. Fellow senior
Femke Aan added two goals and one steal for the home side.
In the opening frame, the Rainbow Wahine posted the first two goals of the game from Gonzalez and freshman
Alba Bonamusa Boix. Arizona State's Bente Rogge answered on a power play opportunity to close out the first quarter.
Hawai'i and Arizona State battled all match as they traded goals in the second and third periods. The teams put up identical offensive outputs, scoring three goals apiece in the second quarter and two in the third.
In a neck-and-neck contest, the last frame proved to be the difference maker. UH limited the Sun Devils to one goal, while the Rainbow Wahine added three consecutive goals from
Carla Abellan,
Carmen Baringo and
Maxine Schaap to knock off Arizona State.
ASU connected on just 7-of-26 (26.9%) attempts, while the Rainbow Wahine finished 10-for-18 (.556).
The Rainbow Wahine will embark on their first road trip of the season, heading to Los Angeles, Calif., with a matchup against third-ranked UCLA on Feb. 1.
