HONOLULU – Fresh off three-consecutive wins to open the season at the Rainbow Invite, the seventh-ranked University of Hawaiʻi water polo team will host fifth-ranked Arizona State at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 12:00 p.m. HT.
The Rainbow Wahine shined in the season-opening Rainbow Invite, outscoring their opponents 50-14 with wins over No. 19 San Diego State, No. 22 Marist and Sonoma State.
UH used a balanced attack on the offensive end with six different players scoring four or more goals through the first three games. Reigning Big West Player of the Year
Irene Gonzalez leads the team with 11 goals to go with four assists.
Hawaiʻi earned a pair of victories over Arizona State last season. In the first meeting in Tempe, Ariz., UH pulled off a 10-9 win over the fifth-ranked Sun Devils behind four goals from
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie. Later in the season in a neutral site meeting in Irvine, Calif., the Rainbow Wahine used four goals and three assists from
Claire Nixon to pick up a 10-8 win over Arizona State, which was ranked sixth at the time.
UH holds a 15-4 lead versus Arizona State in the all-time series, which dates back to the first meeting in 2004. The 'Bows have won three in a row in the series entering Saturday.
Arizona State is 1-0 on the season having defeated Marist by a 16-8 final score in the Jan. 12 season opener.
Hawaiʻi was tied for sixth in the CWPA preseason poll, while Arizona State was fifth. In the Jan. 23 CWPA poll, UH was ranked seventh with Arizona staying at fifth.
Following the game versus Arizona State, the Rainbow Wahine will head to California for four games. The 'Bows will take on UCLA (Feb. 1), Loyola Marymount (Feb. 2) and Fresno State (Feb. 2) in Los Angeles before heading to San Diego to battle UC San Diego on Feb. 3.
