Box Score 2 HONOLULU – The sixth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi Rainbow Wahine water polo team put on a dominating performance on day one of the Rainbow Invite to kick off the 2019 season at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday. The 'Bows defeated No. 22 Marist by a 17-3 final score at noon before securing a 16-2 victory over Sonoma State in game two.
Freshman
Maxine Schaap shined in her UH debut, pacing the offense with seven goals to go with three assists on Saturday.
#6 Hawaiʻi 17 – #22 Marist 3
Schaap scored a game-high four goals to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a convincing 17-3 win over No. 22 Marist in the season opener.
After a back-and-forth first quarter with the score knotted at 1-1, Hawaiʻi reeled off 11-consecutive goals to break the game wide open. Schaap and fellow freshman
Alba Bonamusa Boix registered two goals apiece in the second quarter with the 'Bows outscoring the Red Foxes, 5-0, in the frame.
UH continued to dominate in the third, scoring seven goals in the eight-minute period. Senior
Femke Aan put up two goals in less than a minute to highlight the period. Marist's Jocelyn Castro found the back of the net with 21 seconds left in the third to snap UH's scoring streak.
Sophomore
Lalelei Mata'afa put up the first two goals of the fourth to keep UH's momentum going.

Molly DiLalla yielded two goals in 27:40 to earn the win with freshman

Carmen Baringo finished with a game-high five steals in the opener for UH.
#6 Hawaiʻi 16 – Sonoma State 2
In the final game on day one, Hawaiʻi continued its offensive prowess, routing Sonoma State 16-2. The Rainbow Wahine used a balanced attack that saw seven different players enter the scoring column.
In the first frame, UH was fueled by senior attacker
Irene Gonzalez, who found the back of the net for two scores. The Seawolves were blanked offensively, behind four steals by the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawaiʻi was in full attack mode and kept the momentum stirring, scoring six goals in the second quarter. Mata'afa was a force during the quarter scoring two goals. She finished the night with a career-high four goals. Sonoma State's JoJo Williams ended UH's 6-0 scoring run, connecting on a power play opportunity.
During the last two periods, Hawaiʻi's defense limited the Seawolves to just one goal. The Rainbow Wahine extended their lead to 15-1 at the end of quarter three. Baringo, Schaap and Gonzalez each nabbed a hat trick in game two.
The 2019 Rainbow Invite concludes tomorrow with Sonoma State taking on Marist at 9 a.m. HT and UH going head-to-head with San Diego State at 10:15 a.m. HT at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
