KANE'OHE, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team carded rounds of 319 and 314 in wintery conditions Tuesday on the first day of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
The Rainbow Wahine currently sit in 10
th place. Sixth-ranked Texas is the day one leader at 13-over 589, 14 strokes ahead of 17
th-ranked Oklahoma State (603). No. 24 Houston is in third (617) followed by a three-team pack tied for fifth – Japan's Osaka Gakuin, defending champion No. 31 Texas A&M and Colorado State (620).
With wind and rain causing havoc to the field for the entire day, no golfer is under par heading into Wednesday's third and final round. Texas' Kaitlyn Papp is 1-over 145 with scores of 71 and 74, while teammate Emilee Hoffman and defending medalist Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M is one stroke back at 2-over 146.
UH freshman
Sahara Washington was the team's top performer on the day and is in a six-way tie for 14
th at 9-over 153 after carding rounds of 77 and 76. Fellow freshman
Emma Lower's eagle from the fairway on the par-5 10
th, sparked her opening round 78. She is tied for 33
rd at 14-over 158 after a second round 80.
Junior
Kaci Masuda has a 160 total (81-79) and is tied for 42
nd, freshman
Tyra Tonkham is tied for 46
th at 162 (83-79) and sophomore
Megan Ratcliffe is tied for 59
th at 168 after consecutive rounds of 84.
Senior
Lauren Kirkwood is competing as an individual and is tied for 68
th at 178 (91-87).
The tournament's final round begins on Wednesday with an 8:00 a.m. HT shotgun start.
