HONOLULU – Fresh off a 4-1 weekend in southern California, the fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i water polo team (16-3) returns home to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex for a quick-turnaround rematch with the No. 3 Southern California Trojans (12-1).
The Rainbow Wahine and Trojans squared off to start UH's last week on the mainland, with USC coming out ahead on a big second-half surge for the 12-5 Hawai'i loss. Despite a two-goal difference at the break, USC outscored UH 8-5 in the second half to pull away. Sophomore
Maartje Keuning did the heavy lifting for the 'Bows registering three goals in the match.
The Rainbow Wahine are looking to snap a 21-game losing streak to the Trojans, but freshman Paige Hauschild isn't going to make things east. A gold medal-winning Team USA member at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest Hungary, Hauschild has 10 multi-goal games for a 33-score total (2.54 GPM). Sophomore Denise Mammolito also has 21 goals for the Trojans.
Hauschild netted four scores against the Rainbow Wahine last week, while Mammolito score twice.
USC has split time this season in goal between junior Amanda Longan (91 saves, 4.35 GAPG) and senior Victória Chamorro (44 saves, 2.59 GAPG). While the Trojans allow just 3.85 goals on average, the Rainbow Wahine attack broke through that barrier and will look to net more in the friendly confines of the DKAC.
Last time the teams met in Honolulu, then-No. 1 USC eked out a 9-8 win.
Saturday's match between the Rainbow Wahine and Trojans is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. HT at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center. Hawai'i Athletics will be running live stats for the match via
