No. 5 Water Polo Adds Two More Ranked Wins to Finish Perfect at Aztec Invite

SAN DIEGO – The No. 5 University of Hawai'i water polo team (16-3) recorded another perfect day on Sunday at the Aztec Invitational, wrapping up a 4-0 record on the weekend at the Aztec Aquaplex with an 11-6 win over No. 11 UC San Diego (17-9) and No. 21 San Diego State (7-9).

Match 1: No. 5 Hawai'i 11, No. 11 UC San Diego 6
Starting the day with the early match, again the Rainbow Wahine built up notable lead over ranked opposition, standing strong in the final frame to hold off a late push. Although the UCSD Tritons outscored UH 3-1 in the final frame, it wasn't enough to overcome the Rainbow Wahine in the 11-6 victory.

The Rainbow Wahine made a scoring statement early, firing off three unanswered goals in the opening stanza from Maartje Keuning, Carmen Baringo and Femke Aan. Meanwhile UH held UCSD off the board until the final 17 seconds of the first. The second frame offered the same early attack for UH, as Keuning made a scoring trio with Chloe Barr and Irene Gonzalez, leading UH to a 6-2 advantage at the break.

Although UCSD scored early in the second half to cut the lead to only three, Barr got the 'Bows started and also closed the frame with scores, including a penalty shot score to overpower UCSD 4-1 in the third. By the time the Tritons got moving in the fourth, UH was out of reach.

Barr led the Rainbow Wahine with her fourth hat trick of the year, while Keuning and Gonzalez each added two. Starting her third consecutive match, freshman Molly DiLalla recorded seven saves in the cage.

Match 2: No. 5 Hawai'i 15, No. 21 San Diego State
The Rainbow Wahine reeled off a huge scoring opening half over the host Aztecs, courtesy of the efforts of six individual scorers. With a pair of scores apiece, Carla Abellan and Barr led UH to an 8-1 advantage at halftime.

The Aztecs did nothing to slow the Rainbow Wahine in the third period, as UH scored four goals for the third straight frame as Gonzalez and Barr each reached hat tricks in the match and built the lead to 12-3.

In the final stretch, the Rainbow Wahine responded shot-for-shot with the Aztecs on goals from Elyse Lemay-Lavoie, Keuning and Lalelei Mata'afa to maintain the 10-goal victory, defeat SDSU for the second time this year and finish the weekend 4-0.

Barr netted her second hat trick of the day, while Gonzalez recorded her eighth of the year. The pair led a set of nine Hawai'i scorers against the Aztecs. DiLalla four saves to finish the week with 31 blocks on the week.
