SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore
Cameron Kaneko fired a first round 1-under 71 to lead the University of Hawai'i men's golf team on the first day of the 2017 Big West Conference Championship, Monday at the Sandpiper Golf Club.
Kaneko is in a seven-way tie for 10
th place and led UH to a team score of 301. Host UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Long Beach State are all tied for first at 282. CSUN (284) is fourth followed by UC Riverside (288), UC Irvine (292) and UC Davis (292), Cal State Fullerton (300), and UH.
Individually, CSUN's Felix Mory holds the lead at 4-under 68, one stroke ahead of Cal Poly's Cole Nygren and Jimmy Castles and UC Santa Barbara's Nick Swanson.
Kaneko posted six birdies on his round, including three of his first five holes. Junior
Smart Kittirattanapaiboon carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 29
th while senior
Pono Tokioka battled back for a 77 with three birdies over his final six holes and is tied for 37
th.
Freshman
Taiga Iwasa is tied for 42
nd after a 79 and sophomore
Sam Schwartz is in 44
th with an 80.
The championship continues on Tuesday with the second round.
