HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i water polo team (13-10, 3-1 BWC) returns home for the final regular season match against Big West Conference (BWC) opponent No. 23 CSUN (10-18, 0-3 BWC) on Saturday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. HT. Closing up the regular season at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex (DKAC), Saturday's schedule features a very special program, as Senior Night will occur in tandem with the annual Alumnae Game, while UH celebrates the program's alumnae at the conclusion of the 20th season of Rainbow Wahine water polo.
Amidst the festivities, the Rainbow Wahine must bid aloha to six seniors who will be making their final appearance at the DKAC on Saturday – Nikki Bell, Paula Chillida Esforzado,
Sarah Logan,
Danika Kotylak,
Gabi Mantellato and
Taylor Molde. All of the seniors will be honored postgame during the senior "final float".
The day's events will begin with the annual Alumnae Game in an alumnae-vs-alumnae format, with the match set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the DKAC. The regular season finale match versus CSUN will follow at 6:00 p.m.
In recognition of 20 years of Rainbow Wahine water polo action, there will be a special ceremony during halftime of the CSUN match, as all program alumnae on hand will be recognized, including inaugural season head coach Shari Baird-Smart. She led the 1998 Rainbow Wahine squad to a 29-12 overall record, 5-4 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and a fourth-place overall finish in the National Collegiate Championships – the precursor to the NCAA Championships. All-American Marie-Luc Arpin led the team in scoring with 93 goals. That season, five Rainbow Wahine players earned all-MPSF accolades, with Arpin earning first-team honors, and Lila Fraser, Denise Parreira, Karin Umemura and Vanessa Wasik all earning honorable mention. Earlier this season, Hawai'i joined Long Beach State for a shared alumnae event at LBSU's Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center, honoring that team and the program's milestone season. That event drew 18 alumnae players and coaches from UH, with a large LBSU contingent joining as well. UH's first NCAA women's water polo match came against LBSU on January 29, 1998. Hawai'i won the match, 22-7, with Arpin leading with six goals.
As for the Senior Night opposition, the Rainbow Wahine lead the all-time series against CSUN, 13-4, and have won each of the last two matches. Last season, the 'Bows defeated the Matadors, 17-11, with sophomore
Irene Gonzalez recording a career-high six goals. Most recently, the Matadors have dropped six in a row, including three conference losses to UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
Currently, redshirt junior
Chloe Barr leads the team in scoring with 39 goals, while Gonzalez ranks second with 32 and Bell follows in third with 27 goals. Junior goalkeeper
Ymane Hage has tallied 152 saves so far this season.
