HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i water polo team (12-10, 2-1 BWC) capped off an all-ranked slate with a 13-4 win against No. 12(t) San Diego State (13-12, 4-0 GCC) on Saturday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex (DKAC).
The Rainbow Wahine led right out of the game through the final whistle, with sophomore
Irene Gonzalez topping all scorers with four goals and five other players netting at least one goal.
Hawai'i redshirt juniors
Claire Nixon and
Chloe Barr put the 'Bows up 2-0 to start, however Caroline Israels snapped the shutout for San Diego State to bring the Aztecs within one at the end of the first period.
The Rainbow Wahine quickly caught fire, netting four goals in the second period while holding the Aztecs scoreless. Barr recorded two more while Gonzalez and freshman
Maartje Keuning notched one apiece. Hawai'i held a 6-1 lead at the end of the first half.
The Aztecs chipped at Hawai'i's lead, connecting on back-to-back goals to start the third period. However, the Rainbow Wahine responded with three consecutive goals via Gonzalez and senior
Nikki-Marie Bell.
The 'Bows started the fourth period with another three straight goals from Nixon, Gonzalez and Bell. SDSU netted one more, but Rainbow Wahine freshman
Samantha Malouff quickly responded with the final Hawai'i goal for a final score of 13-4.
Next up, the Rainbow Wahine head out to Davis, Calif. for a Big West Conference match against No. 11 UC Davis on Saturday, April 8.
