HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i (10-9) water polo team returned to action on Saturday evening against No. 15 Indiana (13-6) at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex (DKAC). The Rainbow Wahine bounced back from a tough loss to top-ranked USC the previous day with an 11-5 win over the Hoosiers.
In the second match against the Hoosiers this season, the Rainbow Wahine got even with Indiana, who dealt Hawai'i their first loss of the season at the 2017 UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. Sophomore
Irene Gonzalez led the way in scoring with three goals, while junior goalie
Ymane Hage recorded seven saves.
The Rainbow Wahine took the lead early going up 1-0 via freshman
Maartje Keuning. Indiana countered, but the 'Bows responded with two consecutive goals by Gonzalez and senior
Nikki-Marie Bell for a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Hawai'i continued their offensive attack in the second period, notching four more goals while holding the Hoosiers scoreless. Gonzalez recorded her second goal while sophomore
Erika Pauley, redshirt junior
Claire Nixon and senior
Taylor Molde each added one apiece. The 'Bows held a 7-1 advantage at the half.
Indiana opened the third period with back-to-back goals, however redshirt junior
Chloe Barr registered her first goal with five seconds left in the period to give the 'Bows an 8-3 lead going into the final period.
Hawai'i netted three more goals in the fourth quarter courtesy of Gonzalez, Barr and redshirt senior
Gabi Mantellato. The Hoosiers were able to connect on two goals in the final period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Rainbow Wahine.
