HONOLULU - The No. 8 University of Hawai'i water polo team (9-8, 1-1 BWC) open a five-game homestand this weekend with two matches against top-25 opponents. The Rainbow Wahine face No. 1 Southern Cal (19-0, 1-0 MPSF) on Friday, March 17, at 6:00 p.m. HT, and No. 13 Indiana (13-4) on Saturday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. HT at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex (DKAC).
The Rainbow Wahine snapped a four-game skid last weekend with an 11-6 win over No. 15 Long Beach after falling to No. 5 UC Irvine, 8-7, in the Big West Conference season opener. Seven different 'Bows scored at least one goal in the bounce-back win over LBSU, with sophomore
Irene Gonzalez recording a game-high three goals. Freshman
Maartje Keuning and redshirt senior
Gabi Mantellato followed with two apiece, while junior goalkeeper
Ymane Hage notched nine saves.
Hawai'i has already faced both Southern Cal and Indiana this season. The Rainbow Wahine fell to the USC Trojans in both matches this season, once at the 2017 UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational and again at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. Hawai'i has also already faced Indiana, now headed by former Rainbow Wahine assistant coach Ryan Castle. The Hoosiers dealt the 'Bows their first loss of the season at the UCSB Winter Invite after a late fourth quarter rally pushed them over Hawai'i for an 8-5 defeat.
Before the weekend matches, Southern Cal and Indiana will face each other on Thursday, March 16 at 6 p.m. HT at the DKAC.
