STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i water polo team (6-4) split a pair of matches on the final day of the Stanford Invitational. After the Rainbow Wahine opened the day by gutting No. 20 Loyola Marymount (2-3) in an 11-0 shutout victory at the Belardi Pool, UH ran up against No. 7 Michigan (6-3), falling 8-6, in the final match for UH in the tournament.
Defense was key in the day's opening match as LMU attempted 21 shots, but were unable to connect on any of them. Junior goalkeeper
Ymane Hage set the defensive standard for the match, carrying UH into the second half before handing off to senior
Sarah Logan for the final 13 minutes.
On the offensive end, Rainbow Wahine senior
Nikki-Marie Bell and sophomores
Femke Aan and
Irene Gonzalez all netted two goals apiece to lead the 'Bows over the Lions in the first shutout win since the 2015 campaign.
Hawai'i was quick to fire up the offensive attack, going up 3-0 in the first period. Bell notched both of her two goals on consecutive plays in the opening stanza, followed by Gonzalez' first score.
Well into the second period, Rainbow Wahine redshirt senior
Claire Nixon netted the first goal of the period at the 2:51 mark. Sophomore
Carla Abellan and Gonzalez immediately followed to end the half on a three-score run, and a six-goal lead going into the half.
Aan opened the second half with back-to-back goals, ballooning the Hawai'i lead to eight. After a few scoreless minutes, sophomore
Julia Barton got in on the action, scoring at the 1:55 mark.
The Rainbow Wahine capped off their morning with two more goals in the fourth period via sophomore
Hannah Thompson and freshman
Samantha Shaw to defeat LMU 11-0.

Returning in the late afternoon, the Rainbow Wahine faced the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines for the final match of the tournament. The 'Bows battled the Wolverines back-and-forth, but fell to them for the first time since the 2012 season.
Michigan got on the board first by an exclusion goal from Allison Skaggs. Rainbow Wahine freshman
Maartje Keuning was quick to counter, followed by Bell to give UH a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Michigan's Julie Sellers evened the score at two-all, but UH redshirt senior
Gabi Mantellato countered to push the 'Bows back up, 3-2. Michigan ended the half with two straight goals via Kim Johnson and Sellers, while Hawai'i faced a one-goal deficit at halftime.
Both squads traded goals in the third period, with each recording two apiece. Hawai'i's Abellan and Gonzalez chipped at the Michigan lead, but Danielle Johnson and Skaggs countered for the Wolverines to retain their lead.
Hawai'i netted just one goal in the fourth, courtesy of redshirt junior
Chloe Barr, while Michigan notched two more to seal the UH defeat. The Rainbow Wahine fell to Michigan, 8-6, for just the third time in program history.
The Rainbow Wahine will now have two-and-a-half weeks off before hitting the road for a match against Whittier on Feb. 22, ahead of the UC Irvine Invitational from Feb. 24-26.
