SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (3-2) heads back out on the road for a single match at Santa Clara (1-0) on Feb. 2, followed by a weekend of battling ranked teams at the Stanford Invitational from Feb. 4-5. After falling in both matches on the final day of the 2017 UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational, the Rainbow Wahine hope to find themselves back in the win column this week.
Hawai'i hits the road after eleven days off following their opening weekend at the UCSB tournament. The 'Bows finished the tourney with a 3-2 record, notching victories over No. 13 Pacific, Marist and No. 10 UC San Diego. But the 'Bows fell on to No. 11 Indiana and No. 2 Southern California.
Rainbow Wahine junior
Chloe Barr recorded nine goals en route to earning Big West Player of the Week honors in her first matches back after taking last year off to try out for the Australian national team. Barr tied her career-high with a game-high four scores in a 14-9 victory against the Pacific Tigers.
Hawai'i opens their upcoming roadtrip against the Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Sullivan Aquatics Center at 4:00 p.m. HT. The 'Bows hold a perfect 10-0 all-time record over the Broncos. UH won their last meeting against SCU in their 2015 season opener. In that match, current juniors
Claire Nixon and Barr both recorded four goals apiece to lead UH to a 15-5 win.
The Rainbow Wahine will then head up to Stanford, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invitational from Feb. 4-5 at the Avery Aquatic Center. The tournament features eight top-25 ranked teams split into two groups. On the first day of competition, Hawai'i has an early morning match against No. 6 UC Irvine (2-0) on Feb. 4 at 7:45 a.m. HT. Later that afternoon, the 'Bows will take on the host school and No. 1-ranked Stanford (3-0) at 2:30 p.m. HT. On the final day of competition, the Rainbow Wahine open the day against No. 20 Loyola Marymount on Feb. 5 at 6:30 a.m. HT. The final match is to be determined.
Hawai'i holds a 15-7 record over the UCI Anteaters. Last season, Hawai'i edged out the Anteaters, 3-2, in their 2016 Big West opener. Stanford has undoubtedly been UH's most difficult opponent, holding a 34-0 all-time record over the 'Bows. The Rainbow Wahine hold an 11-3 all-time record over LMU, last defeating them in 2011 with a 16-8 victory.
Also competing in the tournament are No. 7 Michigan, No. 4 California, No. 17 San Jose State and No. 19 UC Davis.
