SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (3-0) remained perfect through the second day of the 2017 UCSB Winter Invitational after defeating Marist (0-1), 13-10, and No. 11(t) UC San Diego, 8-5, on Saturday at the UCSB Recreation Center Aquatics Complex and Campus Pool.
Still ecstatic from yesterday's season-opening victory, the Rainbow Wahine continued to highlight their offensive abilities, leading the way from beginning to end. Seven different 'Bows connected for scores with UH sophomore
Femke Aan pacing all scorers with three. UH remained dominant in meeting the Tritons, taking a five-score lead by halftime, holding off UCSD in the second half to stay perfect.
The Rainbow Wahine wasted no time taking an early 3-0 lead over the Red Foxes, all inside the first six minutes of play, with goals from redshirt junior
Chloe Barr, senior
Nikki-Marie Bell and Aan. Marist's Nastassia McGlothlin netted the Foxes first goal of the match with 2:27 on the first quarter clock. A quick retort from Aan, who connected on two straight goals and recorded a hat trick in the process, gave UH a 5-1 advantage at the end of the first period.
To open the second period, UH sophomore
Hannah Thompson and Bell netted consecutive goals, pushing Hawai'i's lead to six. After a few empty possessions, Rainbow Wahine sophomore
Carla Abellan found the back of the net, further extending UH's lead at 8-1. Trying to get the Red Foxes back in the game, Marist's Caoimhe Whitebloom added two goals to end the half, cutting the lead to five with an 8-3 Hawai'i advantage.
Marist took the upper hand during the third period. After UH's Thompson netted her second goal to start the period, the Red Foxes went on a 3-0 run with goals via Katherine Tijerina, Grace Doerfler and Anais Mathes, bringing Marist within three. With the UH lead dwindling, Barr responded with her second goal of the match, giving UH a 10-6 lead. Under a minute-and-a-half left in the third, the squads were locked in a back-and-forth battle. Marist's Carolyn Gauvin netted her only goal of the match and Rainbow Wahine redshirt junior
Gabi Mantellato immediately followed with her lone goal – but Marist had the last say after Amanda Amorosa netted the final goal of the period. Marist outscored Hawai'i 5-3 in the third, but Hawai'i maintained an 11-8 lead.
Less than two minutes into the final period, senior
Taylor Molde netted her only goal of the match, and after a couple of scoreless minutes, sophomore
Julia Barton followed with the final Hawai'i goal of the morning, pushing their lead to 13-8. The Rainbow Wahine held off a final Marist dash over the closing two minutes, with Justine Castro and Lexi Puhl adding goals, but it wasn't enough to take down the 'Bows. Hawai'i left the pool victorious again with a final score of 13-10.

Claire Nixon. UCSD's Krista Schneider evened the score with a goal after an exclusion was drawn. However, within the final three minutes of the first period, UH junior
Erika Pauley and freshman
Maartje Keuning contributed their first goals, giving Hawaii a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first.
The Rainbow Wahine came out firing in the second, outscoring the Tritons 3-0. Sophomore
Julia Barton recorded her first goal of the match at the five-minute mark, while Barr added one of her own. Nixon notched her second goal of the afternoon, giving Hawaii a 6-1 advantage at the half.
The Tritons defense held the Rainbow Wahine scoreless in the third period while they chipped away at Hawaii's lead. With two goals from UCSD's Kayla Fedler and one from Alexis Wieseler, the 'Bows ended the third period with a 6-4 advantage.
Refusing to let up, Barr recorded her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty shot, followed by Barton's final goal of the afternoon. UCSD's Wieseler was able to connect for the Tritons' last goal just before the two-minute mark, but the Rainbow Wahine were too much to overcome, delivering a final score of 8-5.
