HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors (23-28) got off to a slow start offensively in Friday's series opener against the University of Arizona (36-20), while the Wildcats racked up scores in bunches to close off an 11-2 win over the 'Bows at Les Murakami Stadium.
The game kicked off a very special series for the 'Bows. In addition to Senior Weekend, UH took the time for a compelling pregame event. During the pregame, 40-year "Voice of the Rainbows", broadcaster Don Robbs was honored and spoke to the crowd passionately about his time behind the microphone for UH baseball, closing out his final three career games this weekend.
The Wildcats got rolling quickly after a blank opening frame, sparked by a big night for designated hitter JJ Matijevic, who opened the second frame with a first-pitch home run barely missing the right center scoreboard. Arizona kept the hits and runs coming, going ahead 6-0 before chasing off starter
Kyle Von Ruden in his final start for the Rainbow Warriors.
UA reeled off five more runs off reliever
Patrick Martin in the seventh before senior
Josh Pigg shut things down.
Countering in the home half, the 'Bows finally reached the scoreboard as pinch hitter
Alan Baldwin got UH going as a hit batter to open the seventh, courtesy of reliever Robby Medel.
Kekai Rios followed with a single and
Ethan Lopez drew a walk. Pinch hitter
Alex Sawelson added a single to load the bases, setting up an RBI fielder's choice for
Josh Rojas.
Matt LoCoco chipped in an RBI single to trim the Arizona lead to 11-2.
Pigg continued his run on the mound, going his longest relief appearance of the year and holding the line, finishing a 2.2-inning stretch with three hits and no runs allowed.
Matijevic went 2-for-5 to pace Arizona with two RBI and four runs scored.
Von Ruden (7-3) took the loss after 5.1 innings on the mound, giving 10 hits and a career-high six runs.
For Arizona, JC Cloney (6-3) threw 6.0 innings with four hits and no runs, striking out two.
At the plate, LoCoco led the way with 2-for-4 hitting and an RBI.
The Rainbow Warriors and Wildcats return to action on Saturday night with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at Les Murakami Stadium. Sunday at 1:05 p.m. is the series and season finale, as well as Senior Day for 10 'Bows making their final outing.
