Women's Water Polo

Water Polo Meets UCSB, CSUN In First Big West Road Swing

Goalkeeper Ymane Hage will look to protect UH as the Wahine seek to stay on top in Big West
HONOLULU – The No. 4 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (17-5, 2-0 Big West) continues Big West Conference play this weekend as they head out on the road to face No. 25 Cal State Northridge (10-16, 0-2 Big West) on April 9 at 12:00 p.m. PDT (9:00 a.m. HT), and No. 14 UC Santa Barbara (12-11, 0-1 Big West), April 10 at 12:00 p.m. PDT (9:00 a.m. HT). After reeling off home victories over UC Irvine and UD Davis, the Rainbow Wahine look to maintain the conference's top spot coming down the stretch.

The Rainbow Wahine will hit the road after five matches and nearly a month at home. During the homestand, UH went 4-1, most recently defeating No. 9 UC Davis in a sudden-death thriller, 10-9, secured by the go-ahead goal by Riverside, Calif. junior center Nikki-Marie Bell.

Pacing the team, Barcelona, Spain freshman Irene Gonzalez led the team in scoring with 15 goals across the home stretch, followed by Bell, who netted nine goals, including five against UCD. Gonzalez and Bell were the only two UH players to score at least one goal in every game during the homestand.

The 'Bows hold a 12-4 all-time lead over CSUN, most recently defeating the Matadors, 6-5, in the semi-finals of the 2015 Big West Tournament, which the Rainbow Wahine went on to win. UH also holds a dominating 24-6 all-time record over UCSB. The 'Bows most recently defeated Gauchos, 7-3, in last season's Senior Night match. The Rainbow Wahine haven't lost a match to UCSB since falling to the Gauchos in the seventh-place match of the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament, 11-7.

After squaring off with CSUN and UCSB in California, Hawai'i will return for one final home match this season against No. 16 Long Beach State (14-9, 2-0 BWC) on April 16, lined up to determine the top seed heading into the Big West Championships. The 49ers (14-9, 2-0 Big West) tie UH for the conference lead and are fresh off victories over Brown and CSUN.
