HONOLULU – The No. 4 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine women's water polo team (17-5, 2-0 BWC) defeated the No. 9 UC Davis Aggies (14-10, 0-2 BWC), 10-9 on Saturday night in a sudden-death thriller at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. UH's win over the Aggies puts the Rainbow Wahine at the number one spot in the Big West Conference standings, holding a one game lead over Long Beach State.

UCD's Hannah Harvey netted the first goal of the night at 4:54 in the first quarter to give the Aggies the early lead. UH's junior Nikki-Marie Bell countered with a goal of her own on a 6-on-5 advantage, knotting the score at 1-1 going into the second period.

The Aggies continued to heat up in the second period, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 3-1. UCD opened the second quarter with a penalty goal by Carla Tocchini, followed by an extra-man goal by Allyson Hansen. UH's Bell gave the 'Bows their second goal of the night, bringing them within one. However, UCD's Tocchini again countered to put the Aggies up by two at the end of the half.

UCD looked like they were going to continue their offensive attack with Greta Kohlmoos netting the first goal of the second half to put the Aggies up, 5-2. However, the 'Bows would not go down easily. Bell brought the Rainbow Wahine within two while tallying a hat trick on the night. Freshman Irene Gonzalez put in her first goal of the night after sprinting the length of the pool before the Aggies defense could get set, putting UH within one score at 5-4. Freshman Femke Aan tied the score at 5-5 with 45 seconds left in the third.

The fourth quarter saw both squads exchanging goals. UCD would go up by one with 4:31 left to play on a goal by Hannah Harvey, until last week's leading scorer, Gonzalez, countered with her second goal of the evening to knot the score, seven-all, forcing overtime.

The first extra period was dominated by the 'Bows. Gonzalez continued to hold the hot hand, netting both goals for the Rainbow Wahine to go up by two, 9-7.

Hawai'i was unable to find the back of the net in the second extra period. Meanwhile, UCD countered with two goals of their own to tie the score, 9-9, forcing a second overtime.

Heading into sudden death, Bell netted her fifth and final goal of the evening on a 6-on-5 advantage with 1:42 left on the clock to secure the 10-9 win for the Rainbow Wahine.

Hawai'i will now head out on the road to face No. 25 CSU Northridge on Saturday, April 9 at 12 p.m. PDT and No. 14 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m. PDT.
