Live ScoringKAPALUA, Maui – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished in fifth place after Tuesday's final round of the Big West Championship at Kapalua's Bay Course. The Rainbow Wahine, runner-up last year, was in contention until the back nine and finished the round with a tournament-best 302 for a 925 total.
UC Riverside overtook Cal Poly to capture the team title at 914, four strokes clear the Mustangs (918), who faltered with a final round 303. Six-time defending champion UC Davis placed third at 921 followed by Long Beach State (923), UH (925), CSUN (946), Cal State Fullerton (954), and UC Irvine (981).
UC Davis' Paige Lee shot 1-under 71 to capture medalist honors at 4-over 220. Round 2 leader Long Beach State's Kassidy Teare carded a final round 74 to finish runner-up at 221, missing a birdie putt on 18 for a playoff. UH junior
Izzy Leung placed third at 10-over 225 after a final round 73.
Leung made a run with a front nine 33 which included birdies on Nos. 4 and 7 to get within three strokes off the lead. But the Shatin, Hong Kong native, who tied for 10
th at last year's tourney, had her first blemish of the day with a bogey on No. 12, then carded a double on No. 13 and bogey on No. 17 before finishing her round with a birdie 4 on the 18
th.
After a runner-up finish at last year's championship,
Raquel Ek fired 78 to tie for 11
th place at 231. The San Diego, Calif., native posted three birdies and nine bogeys on an up-and-down round. Freshman
Kaci Masuda shot 5-over on her front nine but rebounded nicely with a 1-under back to post 4-over 76. The Pearl City, O'ahu native totaled 231 for a tie for 11
th place in her first Big West Championship.
Junior
Daezsa Tomas was 1-over on her back nine en route to a 3-over 75, her best score of the tourney, for a tie for 24
th place at 238. Junior Kelli-Anne Masuda also posted her best round of the week at 6-over 78 for a 245 total and 33
rd place showing.
At the conclusion of the tournament, the Big West awards were announced and Leung was selected to the all-conference second team while Ek was an honorable mention pick.
The tournament wrapped up the 2015-16 season for the Rainbow Wahine, who posted three top three finishes including a season-opening win at the Hobbie Creek Classic.
