DAVIS, Calif. – Stopped on Saturday by heavy rains in Northern California, nothing stopped the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors baseball team (16-15, 5-1 Big West) on Sunday, as they claimed both games of the doubleheader at UC Davis (8-18, 1-5 Big West), earning victories of 5-0 and 7-2 at Dobbins Field.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors closed out the 40-hit series on Sunday in consecutive victories, pushing past the Aggies for the first sweep of the season, coming out on top in six of the last seven games versus UC Davis, carrying the wins into the first place slot of the Big West Standings. UH has now won 10 of its last 14 games.
Â
Game 1Held down for two innings of the first game of the doubleheader, the Rainbow Warriors went to work as second baseman
Josh Rojas led off the third with a single, and center fielder
Matt LoCoco followed by pulling back a bunt to fire a single into center. After both moved over on a sacrifice bunt, shortstop
Jacob Sheldon-Collins made it count with an RBI groundout and first baseman
Eric Ramirez secured the 2-0 lead on a two-out RBI grounder single up the middle.
Â
While right-handed UC Davis starter Justin Mullins settled in after falling into deficit, the 'Bows pressed him to 107 pitches after seven innings, sending the Aggies to the bullpen for left-hander Chris Brown. The UCD reliever plunked LoCoco with his second pitch and dealt
Johnny Weeks a four-pitch walk. After both moved into scoring position on a Sheldon-Collins sacrifice bunt, Ramirez doubled-up the UH lead with a two-run single into center field, prompting a UCD move to right-hander Ryan Steindorf on the mound, halting the UH run.
Â
Rookie
Ethan Lopez checked in as a pinch hitter in the ninth, more than doing his job, scoring from third on a wild pitch kicked right after getting aboard on a single through the right side to procure the insurance run for the Rainbow Warriors.
Â
Despite his first walk in 24.1 innings in the opening stanza and Aggies through the first five innings, right-handed senior starter
Kyle Von Ruden (5-1) was dealing late, retiring the final 15 batters to secure the 5-0 victory on a complete game shutout, the first for UH since 2014, striking out four while scattering just three hits.
Â
Mullins (0-3) went 7.0 innings and took the loss, striking out seven with one walk.
Â
Ramirez proved hero for the 'Bows at the plate, hitting 2-for-3, batting in three of UH's five runs.
Â
Game 2Coming back 40 minutes later, the 'Bows got started again in the third inning, as Rojas capitalized on an
Alex Fitchett leadoff single, firing an RBI single up the middle for the first advantage. Sheldon-Collins added a line shot up the middle. Giving UH some breathing room,
Marcus Doi capped the frame with a two-out, two-run double that eluded the right fielder for a 4-0 'Bows advantage.
Â
The Aggies broke up the gridlock in the sixth, snapping a string of 22 consecutive scoreless innings by the UH pitching staff with an unearned run on an error to trim the UH lead to 4-1.
Â
However, the 'Bows fired right back with more, as Weeks coaxed out a leadoff walk in the seventh, and Sheldon-Collins followed with a single. Doi again came through in the clutch, this time against reliever Matt Blais, firing off a second-pitch, two-run single. Ka'aua would later cap off the UH scoring with a fielder's choice RBI, taking the 'Bows advantage to 7-1.
Â
The Aggies worked in another run in the ninth off a walk and two base hits, but it was too little, too late for UC Davis, as the 7-2 UH win closed off the doubleheader and completed the series sweep.
Â
Hatch (3-3) earned the win after pitching 7.0 innings just one unearned run on four hits, striking out five with two walks.
Â
UCD Starter Nat Hamby (1-1) only made it through 4.1 innings, throwing 86 pitches in the loss, giving eight hits and four runs, striking out two and walking two.
Â
Doi topped the 'Bows, hitting 2-for-5 with a career-best four RBI and one run, while Sheldon-Collins was 3-for-5 with two runs and a run.
Kekai Rios, Ka'aua and Fitchett each logged a pair of hits apiece.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors return to Honolulu on Monday, setting up for a three-game meeting with Cal Poly (19-11, 2-1 Big West) at Les Murakami Stadium, April 15-17. The Mustangs won the series against defending champion Cal State Fullerton on Sunday in their first BWC series.
