Box Score | Box Score (html)

HONOLULU-The University of Hawai'i softball team (12-11, 0-0 Big West) was edged out by California, 3-2 on the opening night of the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday night. UH's Jennifer Iseri had a solid outing in her third career start, but took the loss dropping her record to 2-1.

The Rainbow Wahine got an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a towering home run over the left-centerfield fence by Ulu Matagiese. It marked Matagiese's second home run of the season, and the sixth of the junior's career.

Cal tied the game in the top of the fourth at 1-1. Jazmine Jackson led the inning off with an infield hit to second. She stole second then advanced to third on a ground out to short and then scored on a ground ball to first.

The Golden Bears took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run single up the middle by Kylie Reed to score Lindsay Rood and Danika Bailey.

Hawai'i, however mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Breanna Ojala led off the frame with a line drive single that hit off the centerfield fence. Rachael Turner followed with a double ripped to the right-centerfield gap to put both runners into scoring position. Cal's Katie Sutherland-Finch then got two strike outs. But Sarah Muzik then drilled a single to leftfield, scoring Ojala from third. But on the play, pinch runner Alia Monges had stopped at third initially but the leftfielder booted the ball so Monges went home. At third, however, head coach Bob Coolen who was coaching at third touched Monges on the back as she tried to score which was called for the final out thus snuffing out the Rainbow rally.

Iseri scattered 10 hits and gave up three runs with no walks and two strike outs.

California's Kourtney Shaw earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. She gave up one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in four-plus innings of work. Sutherland-Finch threw the final two innings, giving up one run on three hits with two strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine continue play in the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament on Thursday with a 6:00 pm game against No. 21 Baylor which follows Cal vs. North Dakota State at 3:30 pm.
