Men’s Volleyball To Host UC Irvine In Pivotal MPSF Series

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team's chances to qualify for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation postseason tournament begins with a pivotal two-match league series with No. 14 UC Irvine, Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26. Match time is 7:00 p.m., for both matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The eighth-ranked Rainbow Warriors (12-9, 7-9 MPSF) were idle last week after taking both matches at CSUN two weeks ago in Northridge, Calif., which snapped a five-match losing streak. UH sits in seventh place in the MPSF standings, two games ahead of ninth place UCI. The top eight teams qualify for the league tournament next month.

The Anteaters (8-15, 5-11) will fly cross country and over the Pacific Ocean after going 1-2 in an East Coast trip which opened with a pair of losses to Ball State and Penn State followed by a win at George Mason on Tuesday. UCI is in the midst of a month-long stretch of road matches, which they are 3-3 and also includes a league match at UC San Diego and two matches in the Asics Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.

The teams split a pair of matches in Irvine, Calif., last season with the Eaters winning in three on the first night and the Warriors taking the rematch in four sets that snapped an 11-match losing streak in the series. UCI has won the last five matches in Honolulu dating back to 2012, including last season's match-up on the final day of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational.
