Box Score (html)HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai'i softball team scored in each of the first two innings then hung on for a 4-3 win over Iowa on Wednesday in the first day of the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic.
The Rainbow Wahine (14-14 overall) scored the contest's first run on a bases-loaded walk by
Breanna Ojala.
The 'Bows loaded the bases again, this time in the second inning on consecutive singles by
Heather Cameron,
Alia Monges and
Sarah Muzik.
Nicole Lopez then made it four straight with a sharp base hit up the middle to plate Cameron but the ball was misplayed by the Hawkeyes' centerfielder and rolled all the way to the fence. The error allowed Monges and Muzik to also score, putting Hawai'i up, 4-0.
Iowa (7-14) made some noise in the sixth as three Hawai'i errors led to three Hawkeye runs, cutting UH's lead to 4-3.
But starter
Brittany Hitchcock beared down, retiring four of the five batters she faced to earn the win, improving her record to 5-7. Hitchcock went the distance with a five-hitter with six strikeouts and all three runs unearned.
Muzik and Lopez each had two hits for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai'i faces Texas at 6 p.m. on Thursday as the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic continues. Iowa defeated the Longhorns in the tournament's opening game, 1-0. Texas and Iowa meet again in Thursday's opening game at 3:30 p.m.
