HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors baseball team closed out its four-game series with New Mexico on Monday at Les Murakami Stadium, falling 7-1 to the Lobos in the series finale.
Common of their offense both last year and in this series, the Lobos got on the scoreboard early, jumpstarted by catcher Chris DeVito's leadoff double in the second inning, who was quickly sent home on third baseman Jared Holley's RBI triple. Shortstop Dalton Bowers followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 Lobo lead.
Kept off the board for two innings, left fielder Jared Mang drove a ball out in left field to grow the UNM lead in the fifth frame, later capped by a three-run full count home run drive to right field by first baseman Jack Zoellner for the 6-0 advantage.
Senior UH shortstop
Jacob Sheldon-Collins broke the 14-inning Rainbow Warrior scoring drought in the sixth, leading off with a double past the first baseman, reaching third on a pickoff error and coming home on first baseman
Eric Ramirez' RBI drive down the right field line, narrowing the deficit to 6-1.
The Lobos took the run right back in the seventh, as Zoellner reached on an error and came home on center fielder Reece Weber's single snuck through the right side, catching the UH infield out of position.
As the game wound down, the 'Bows mounted a comeback attempt, registering four hits and two walks in the final two frames, loading up the bases in both instances, but UNM closer Luis Gonzalez shut down each push, holding the margin at 7-1.
Making his first career start, right-handed senior
Alex Hatch (0-1) took the loss, pitching 5.0 innings with eight hits and six runs, striking out five. James Harrington (1-0) earned the win, throwing 7.0 innings with three strikeouts and one run allowed.
Sheldon-Collins led the Rainbow Warriors at the plate, hitting 2-for-5, scoring UH's lone run. Ramirez and outfielder
Alan Baldwin each collected two hits.
The Rainbow Warriors return to action Friday, Feb. 26 in a neutral site meeting, a three-game set with San Francisco in Moraga, Calif. The Dons opened up 0-4 after a series at fellow Big West team UC Santa Barbara.
