Swim And Dive Pick Up Victories On Sunday

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii swimming and diving teams had a good day in the pool on Sunday, as the Rainbow Warriors beat Dartmouth in a dual meet 184.00-113.00, while the Rainbow Wahine fell to UCLA 231.50-65.50 but beat Oregon State 189.00-102.00 and Dartmouth 216.50-78.50.

In men's 1-meter diving, Grant Newcombe scored a 346.45, the No. 7 score in program history and an NCAA Zone E qualifying mark, to win the event, while teammate Johan Sandell was second with a score of 309.65. In women's 3-meter diving Mariah Renteria had a personal best of 242.80 while Madison Sthamann led Hawaii with a 260.05 to finish fourth in the event behind a quartet of UCLA divers.

Franziska Weidner finished second in the women's 200 freestyle in 1:50.21, just behind UCLA's Kenisha Liu who won the event in 1:50.12. Silvija Djelic finished fifth in 1:55.54. Hawaii took first and second in the men's 200 free with Jonas Gutzat finishing in 1:40.22 to take first, and Yuri Samouilich taking second in 1:42.30. The UH men also captured first and second in the 100-yard backstroke, as Kane Follows won in 50.91, ahead of teammate Evan Rabanal's time of 52.98.

Mateusz Chaba and Kyle Swardenski secured the top two spots for the Hawaii men in the 200 fly, as Chaba finished in 1:52.24, ahead of Swardenski's 1:55.03.

Weidner earned a second-place finish in the women's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.22, while Bryndis Hansen finished fourth with a time of 52.32. Reed Wynn and Gutzat took the top two spots in the men's 100 free, with Reed finishing in 45.86 and Gutzat finishing in 46.60. Weidner finished second in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:03.52, while Follows' time of 1:55.17 was best among the men.

The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine return to action with the Wally Nakamoto Diving Invite Jan. 5 and 6, and meets against Minnesota (men) and Minnesota and Drury (women) on Jan. 7 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
