HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team had little difficulty in sweeping UC San Diego in straight sets, Friday in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 in a match that lasted only 93 minutes. The rematch is Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
With the win, the Rainbow Warriors (7-1, 2-1 MPSF) improved to 6-0 at the Stan Sheriff Center this season and extended their home win streak to 15 matches dating back to 2015.
Senior outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic led the Warriors with 12 kills, hitting 476. Freshman opposite
Stijn van Tilburg added five kills in just two sets while middle blocker
Hendrik Mol posted five kills and six blocks. Junior middle
Iain McKellar served three of the team's six aces and libero
Kolby Kanetake had a match-high nine digs.
As a team, UH hit .397 compared to .116 for the Tritons. Opposite Tanner Syftestad led UCSD (3-6, 0-5) with 11 kills.
Hawai'i jumped out to a 12-7 early in Set 1 spurred by seven Triton hitting errors. UCSD would get no closer than three the rest of the way as the Warriors won 25-20. The Tritons committed 10 errors in the set while Zarkovic led UH with five kills.
In Set 2, Hawai'i scored six unanswered for a 13-5 lead with the help of a pair McKellar aces and an exclamation point overpass kill by setter
Jennings Franciskovic. UH hit .381 in the set and forced nine Triton hitting errors.
Even with a shuffled lineup in Set 3 that included middle
Nainoa Frank, outside hitter
Brett Rosenmeier, and Mol moving to opposite, the Warriors led early 15-10. The lead extended to 22-13 and freshman
Dalton Solbrig made his first career appearance.
