SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 7 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team concluded the weekend-long UC Santa Barbara tournament with back-to-back victories Sunday morning at Campus Pool. UH defeated No. 8 San Jose State, 7-5 and CSU Bakersfield, 12-3 and opens the season with a 5-1, 0-0 Big West record.
The Rainbow Wahine had a standout weekend to open the season, finishing 5-1 at the tournament and giving up its only game to No. 2 UCLA yesterday.
In their first game of the morning, the Rainbow Wahine pulled through with a third-quarter surge against San Jose State that cemented a 7-5 victory over the Spartans.
Newcomers
Julia Barton,
Femke Aan, and
Carla Abellan each scored a pair of goals towards the win, with Aan, Abellan, and
Nikki-Marie Bell contributing one apiece in their third-quarter run. In the final period, Barton sealed the 'Bows' advantage, scoring their final goal of the game. Â
The Rainbow Wahine dominated their final game against CSUB, winning in a landslide 12-3. After holding the Roadrunners scoreless for back-to-back quarters in the second and third and a 4-2 advantage in the fourth, UH carried momentum to the end.
Barton led UH with four goals, while
Danika Kotylak and
Irene Gonzalez added two each.
The Rainbow Wahine next head to the Brown Invitational, Feb. 5-7 in Providence, R.I. They will face teams from the east-coast, including Harvard, Bucknell, Marist, Hartwick, Wagner, and host Brown.
