HONOLULU – The No. 7 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team captured its seventh Outrigger Resorts Invitational title following a 25-16, 25-23, 25-12 victory over Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (3-0) did not drop a set in the three-day tourney with wins over King (Tenn.) University, Harvard, and the defending national runner-up Flyers (3-1). The title marked the first for UH since 2010 and also just the second time they have gone undefeated along with the 1996 squad.

Tournament Most Outstanding Player Stijn van Tilburg led the way with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .444 along with three digs and three blocks. The freshman from the Netherlands finished the tourney with 47 kills (5.22 avg.) to lead all attackers.

Also making the all-tournament team for the Warriors were outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic (10 kills, 3 aces), setter Jennings Franciskovic (32 assists), and libero Kolby Kanetake (8 digs). UH his .395 as a team and recorded nine team blocks and eight aces – all by Zarkovic, Iain McKellar (3) and Kupono Fey (2).

UH improved to 14-2 all-time versus the Flyers and are now 3-0 to start the season for the second straight year.

Lewis' Julian Moses shared team-high honors with seven kills and was named to the all-tournament team along with middle blocker Jacob Schmiegelt. Lewis hit .221 for the match.

Harvard's Branden Clemens was also selected to the all-tourney team.

Zarkovic spurred UH's early advantage in Set 1 with a tremendous dig to keep a rally alive and an ace, on consecutive plays, to help the Warriors open up a 17-12 lead. Zarkovic served five straight during a 6-0 Hawai'i run that saw the lead balloon to 20-12. UH sided-out to victory as van Tilburg ended the set with his fifth kill. The Warriors recorded five blocks in the set and hit .346 as a team.

Three straight points by the Warriors – after kills by Zarkovic and van Tilburg and a Lewis hitting error – put UH on top 16-12 in a tightly-contested Set 2. The Flyers tied it at 21 with four straight points before van Tilburg ended the rally and an ace by McKellar on the very next play put UH back ahead. After a Fey hitting error, van Tilburg took over with back-to-back kills giving the Warriors a 25-23 win and 2-0 lead in the match.

In Set 3, UH jumped all over the Flyers, who altered their lineup with three different starters. The Warriors led 6-2 and extended their lead to 11-4 after a pair of aces by Zarkovic. Both of Fey's aces occurred during a 7-0 run which gave Hawai'i an insurmountable 23-10 lead.

In the day's earlier match, Harvard defeated King (Tenn.) University, 25-12, 25-17, 25-17 to finish 1-2 in its first Outrigger Invitational. King concluded its first Outrigger with a 0-3 record.

The Warriors open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play next week against Pepperdine, Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16. Match time is 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) both nights.
