Game Highlights (Courtesy of OC Sports TV)HONOLULU—After knotting the game up in the sixth, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors (21-28, 12-11 Big West) baseball team was unable to make a second rally in response to Cal State Fullerton (30-22, 15-5 Big West) surging ahead late, as the Titans held off the final UH push in the 4-2 loss on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The starting pitchers, John Gavin for CSF and
Tyler Brashears for UH, faced off early in Saturday's game two of the final 'Bows conference series, with both going scoreless through the first four frames.
The Titans broke through first, as Jerrod Bravo coaxed out a leadoff walk in the fifth and reached third on a wild pitch and a grounder. Shortstop Timmy Richards sent him home with a double deep down the right field line. Richards went on to score as well, crossing the plate on left fielder Josh Vargas' RBI double into the right center alley for the 2-0 advantage.
Although the 'Bows missed in the home half, the lead didn't stand for long. Center fielder
Kaeo Aliviado squared a 3-1 pitch, crushing his fifth home of the year beyond the right field wall—his first bomb since March 17 versus Oklahoma.
Eric Ramirez followed up with base hit, while
Matt Miller joined him on a Richards error, and
Chayce Ka'aua loaded the bases with a single lined to left field. Third baseman
Jonathan Weeks cashed in the opportunity, beating the throw with a bang-bang play at first on the fielder's choice play, sending Ramirez home to tie the game at two-all.
Facing
Andrew Jones on the mound, the Titans used pinch hitters to spark a surge, beginning with a Josh Estill single up the middle. Back-to-back bunts loaded up the bases. Jake Jeffries fired a rope down the third base line to bring home a pair and push the Titans ahead for good, 4-2.
For the Rainbow Warriors, Jones (1-4) takes the loss, throwing 1.2 innings, giving three (3) hits and two (2) earned runs, issuing one (1) walk and one (1) strikeout.
Reliever Miles Chambers (4-3) picks picked up the win after 1.2 innings of work, allowing only one (1) hit and one (1) walk, claiming a single strikeout.
At the plate, Aliviado got back in the swing of things to lead the 'Bows, hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run from the homer, while also adding a walk late. Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the other UH run.
Prior to Saturday's game, OC Sports broadcaster Jim Leahey presented the Chuck Leahey Award to Ken Fujimura, retired 37-year equiment manager for the Rainbow Warrors. The award is presented annually to an honoree who, in their lifetime, has celebrated and supported baseball in Hawaii.
With the loss, Cal State Fullerton takes a 2-0 series lead into Sunday's Senior Day finale. The Rainbow Warriors and Titans will meet at 5:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. The game will be followed by a senior recognition ceremony for the eight (8) outgoing seniors. Sunday's game and the ceremony will be televised on OC Sports TV, and the final Big West contest will also air live on ESPN Honolulu 1420 AM.
