Game Highlights (Courtesy of OC Sports)HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors (11-19, 2-3 Big West) baseball team scored in bunches and kept opening night's momentum in full effect during the second game of the series with UC Davis (18-9-1, 3-2 Big West), Friday (April 3) night at Les Murakami Stadium, riding a 12-hit night to the 11-3 victory.
The Rainbow Warriors went to work early on UCD starter Orlando Razo, with redshirt freshman catcher
Chayce Ka'aua making the most of bases loaded situation, firing a rope down the third base line for a three-run double to put the 'Bows on the board in the second. With the bases reloaded, center fielder
Kaeo Aliviado added a sacrifice fly to put Hawai'i on top 4-0.
The Aggies quieted the 'Bows, momentarily, but UH got into Matt Blais for consecutive scoring frames, after the reliever took over for an injured Razo near the close of the second. After leading off the fourth with a single,
Jacob Sheldon-Collins crossed the dish on an Aliviado line drive RBI single forehead-high back at Blais. The 'Bows came back in the fifth for more, getting started as
JJ Kitaoka reached on an error with two outs. Ka'aua followed with a single and Sheldon-Collins placed a triple perfectly, deep down the right field line to bring the pair home. Second baseman
Stephen Ventimilia extended the UH lead to 8-0 with an RBI single up the middle, plating Sheldon-Collins.
To put it simply, Hawai'i starter
Tyler Brashears  was dealing, and retired 10 consecutive batters en route to a career night, after allowing a single hit in each of the first two innings. However, in the sixth, the junior got into some trouble, with three consecutive Aggie singles to get started. The 'Bows minimized the damage, allowing a single run to score on a tough 4-6-3 double play ball, and Brashears closed of the threat with a looking strikeout.
Facing reliever Cameron Law, the 'Bows patience at the plate paid off, as Law walked five straight batters, providing RBI for
Matt LoCoco and
Eric Ramirez. Kitaoka tacked on a sac fly to cap the UH scoring in an 11-1 advantage.
Although the Aggies added a pair of runs in the ninth,
Eric Gleese kept things under control, bouncing back from a first-batter single for consecutive swinging strikeouts, and an easy groundout to Ventimilia at second closed the book on the 11-3 victory.
Brashears (4-3) earned the victory, with career marks of eight (8.0) innings pitched and nine (9) strikeouts, allowing seven (7) hits and one (1) run, with no walks.
For the Aggies, Razo (4-2) takes the loss, throwing just 1.2 innings, allowing three (3) hits and four (4) runs, walking four (4) with no strikeouts.
It was a highlight hitting performance for the 'Bows, who tabbed 12 base hits and only struck out once on the night, recording their fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season to take a 2-0 lead in the Big West series. Through the first two games, UH has outscored UCD 19-6.
Leading the charge on Friday was Ka'aua, who garnered career bests of 3-for-4 hitting with three (3) RBI and two (2) runs scored. Sheldon Collins had a seemingly quiet 3-for-5, considering his two (2) RBI and two (2) runs scored. Aliviado was 1-for-3 with two (2) RBI and a run.
The Rainbow Warriors and Aggies return to Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday (April 4) for the third game of the series at 6:35 p.m. The game will be televised live on OC Sports TV and broadcast on the radio on ESPN Honolulu 1420 AM.
