PROVO, Utah – The No. 1 University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team fell to No. 6 Brigham Young, 25-27, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25 Friday night at Smith Fieldhouse. UH drops to a 23-4, 18-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record with the loss ending a 16-match winning streak.

UH still has a chance at earning the regular-season conference title if the Rainbow Warriors win the rematch on Saturday night paired with a UC Irvine loss to UC San Diego.

Sophomore Kupono Fey had a standout night to lead the Warriors with a match-high and career-best 19 kills and added two service aces and five digs. Brook Sedore and Taylor Averill added 10 kills apiece, while libero Kolby Kanetake tallied 15 digs for his 16th double-figure match this season.

The 'Bows came up short at the net, allowing BYU (16-9, 13-8 MPSF) to out-block them 14.5 to 5.5 with Price Jarman dishing out nine total. Meanwhile, Brenden Sander recorded a team-high 15 kills for the Cougars.

In a tight match in Set 1, the Cougars gained a four-point lead midway through. However, the 'Bows answered back with a 3-0 run capped off with a service ace by Kupono Fey to bring UH back 18-17. Following a BYU attack error and a kill by Sinisa Zarkovic, the Warriors tied it 19-19 and went on to tie it five more times to follow, cutting off two BYU chances at set-point before the Cougars broke away to end it 27-25.

Halfway through Set 2, BYU pulled off three back-to-back blocks to set the 'Bows back 16-10. The Warriors answered back with a 6-2 run to bring themselves within two points of the Cougars, however, it was not enough to pull ahead as BYU held on for the win.

The Warriors started off Set 3 with a slight edge on BYU until the Cougars dished out four straight points to pull ahead and steal the lead 16-15. After rallying back-and-forth, UH finally made a broke away after a BYU service error, Fey followed up with an ace. From there, the 'Bows rode the momentum to win it 25-21.

UH finished Set 4 hitting at -.030 (9-10-33), unable to recover from an eight-point deficit as the Cougars led 20-12 to take control of the set. Fey hammered down four kills of Warriors' last five points to follow, but it wasn't enough to pull ahead.

The 'Bows play their final regular season match, Saturday night against the Cougars at Smith Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m. MT before returning home to host the MPSF Quarterfinal on April 25. UH has not won on BYU's home-court since 2003.
