LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 6 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated No. 12 Long Beach State, 4-3 in an overtime thriller, Sunday afternoon at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. UH improves to a 14-8, 3-2 Big West Conference record.
The Rainbow Wahine recovered from a one-point deficit in the fourth quarter, with sophomore
Chloe Barr tying it 3-3 with the Beach to take it overtime. After a silent three-minute period to follow,
Gabi Mantellato Dias scored the game-winner for UH's final Big West victory.
Barr powered the Rainbow Wahine with a pair of goals, while
Claire Nixon and Dias added one each. Meanwhile, LBSU's Alexandra Massier scored a team-high two goals for the Beach.
UH footed a 2-1 advantage in the first quarter, but were shut out by the 49ers in the second and third as LBSU pulled ahead as the Rainbow Wahine trailed 2-3. In the fourth however, Barr found the net just in time.
The Rainbow Wahine return to home to host the 2015 Big West Conference Championship, April 24-26 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
