Outside hitters
Sinisa Zarkovic (15 kills, 10 digs) and
Scott Hartley (14 kills, 10 digs) led the Rainbow Warriors, both reaching for double-doubles. Senior opposite
Brook Sedore additionally tallied a team-high 16 kills for UH. The Waves were led by Parker Kalmbach and Scott Rhein, who hit 18 and 11 kills, respectively.
Pepperdine broke away from the 'Bows early in Set 1 with six unanswered points to foot an 11-7 lead. However, the Warriors inched back and tied it three more times before finally pressuring the Waves into an attack error for a 23-22 lead. Averill immediately followed up with a service ace, taking the Warriors to set point, but Pepperdine held on tight, tying the score three times to follow before Zarkovic blasted out the final kill to end it 28-26 for UH.
The Waves controlled the pace for most of Set 2, leading 17-11 halfway through. The 'Bows made a huge climb back, cutting Pepperdine's lead down to just two points, 24-22 following a double-block by
Zach Radner and Holt, but were unable to pull ahead in the end, falling just short to the Waves, 25-22.
UH came back strong in Set 3, pulling off an early 5-1 run to gain a commanding 15-10 midway through. Once the Warriors hit the 20 point mark, Pepperdine rumbled back with a 5-2 advantage to cut the 'Bows lead down 22-21. However, UH answered back immediately with a two-point run to get to set point. The Waves pulled off just one more kill before Zarkovic capped it off again for the 'Bows, 25-22.
In Set 4, Hartley exploded for 10 kills, and led the 'Bows to a five-point advantage, 20-15 after thrashing out three in a row. The Waves dabbled towards a comeback, but could not keep up with the Warriors, as Zarkovic finished strong with three back-to-back kills to finish off Pepperdine 25-18.
UH will face the Waves again for the series-finale on Sunday, March 8 at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
