ScoresheetHONOLULU – The No. 7 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team wiped out Pomona-Pitzer, 16-2 Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine advance to an 11-6, 1-1 Big West Conference record.
Sophomores
Chloe Barr and
Danika Kotylak led the Rainbow Wahine with four goals each, combining for half of UH's 16 points. Meanwhile, Pomona's Morgan McCracken and Mahalia Prater-Fahey scored the Sagehen's only two goals of the night.
UH kicked-off the match with a commanding 3-0 advantage to start as
Gabi Mantellato Dias hit the first goal of the night just 15 seconds in followed by back-to-back goals by Kotylak. After a Rainbow Wahine exclusion, McCracken converted a corner shot for the Sagehens off of the power play to inch them back, 3-1. But with 35 seconds left,
Paula Chillida Esforzado lobbed on right over Sagehens' goalie Ahsha
Earwood and in, extending UH's lead 4-1 for the first quarter.
Straight into the second quarter, Barr scored two goals in a row followed by two explosive skip shots from Erica Pauley and
Caity Lopes da Silva, dominating for an 8-1 lead by halftime. The Rainbow Wahine shut out the Sagehens again in the third, while Barr hammered in two more to extend their lead to 10-1.
After another three-straight goals by UH, Pomona was able to pull off just one more goal in the final quarter, but were quickly silenced after the Rainbow Wahine answered back with three more goals to follow as
Caity Lopes da Silva skipped one past Earwood with just two seconds left, capping off a 16-2 landslide victory.
The Rainbow Wahine will take on the Brazilian National Team Sunday afternoon in an exhibition match-up at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
