HONOLULU – The No. 7 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team fell to No. 3 USC, 10-1 Friday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine drop to a 10-6 overall record and remain 1-1 in the Big West Conference.
Senior
Caity Lopes da Silva scored UH's only goal of the night from five-meters out towards the end of the second quarter to trim the Trojans' lead down 4-1 at halftime. The Rainbow Wahine came close multiple times, but were unable to put any more points on the board for the remainder of the match.
Despite a tough loss, freshman goalie
Ymane Hage stepped up for UH, recording a career-high seven saves and even added one steal for the Rainbow Wahine.
The first goal of the match didn't come until over halfway through the first quarter, with USC's Stephania Haralabidis taking full advantage of the Trojans' power-play following a UH exclusion. Extending to a 4-0 run early in the second quarter, USC converted a penalty shot after a foul was called on the Rainbow Wahine.
The Rainbow Wahine were able to tire out the Trojans through the second and third quarters. After holding USC to just one goal in the second, the Trojans put up only two more goals in the third, with Hage protecting the net with back-to-back saves. However, USC surged for four more unanswered points in the final quarter, defeating UH 10-1.
UH continues action tomorrow night, as they take on Pomona-Pitzer at 5:30 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
