SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened day one of the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State, taking down Wagner, 10-5 at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Rainbow Wahine advance to a 9-5, 1-1 Big West Conference record.
Sophomore Gabbi Mantellato Dias led the Rainbow Wahine scoring four of UH's 10 goals while
Megan Ottoboni and
Chloe Barr added two apiece.
Claire Nixon and
Zoe Respondek additionally added one goal each while
Ymane Hage recorded six saves in the goal.
UH blasted out five goals to start the match off strong in the first quarter, gaining a 5-2 advantage before shutting out the Seahawks in the second, 2-0 for a commanding 7-2 advantage by halftime.
Wagner attempted to inch back, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 3-2 in the third quarter, but still trailed by four points and couldn't recover, as UH shut the Seahawks out again in the final, 1-0 for a landslide 10-5 victory.
Elise Begg and Jess Lundgren each added two goals for the Seahawks.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude the Aztec Invitational Sunday afternoon as they take on Princeton. UH returns home March 20 to host former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation-rival USC at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
