HONOLULU – The No. 4 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team defeated Hope International, 24-12, 21-25, 25-10, 25-17 Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH advances to a 17-3, 12-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record and continues a 10-game winning streak, the team's longest winning streak since 2007.
The Rainbow Warriors were led by seniors
Scott Hartley and
Taylor Averill, who each added 11 kills for UH.Additionally, senior
Ryan Leung finished the night with a career-high seven kills. Meanwhile, Dominique Blonski recorded a match-high 17 kills for the Royals.
UH breezed past the Royals in Set 1, 25-12 after recording a .700 attacking percentage with 16 kills and just two errors in 21 swings. After footing a 16-7 lead midway through, the 'Bows never looked back as the Royals only scored five more points before
Brook Sedore (nine kills) capped it off for the win. Sedore additionally netted a service ace in the first set, surpassing Delano Thomas (2002-'04) for third in the program's all-time career-aces list with 109.
With
Scott Hartley stepping into Set 2 as the only starter for the 'Bows, Hope International set off with a 16-10 lead at the halfway point. However, UH quickly answered back with a 6-1 run, bouncing back within one-point of the Royals, 16-17. The two teams rallied back and forth to follow, but Hope ended the set with a 4-1 advantage to win it, 25-21.
All starters stepped back onto the court for Set 3, setting a pace the Royals couldn't keep up with. The 'Bows led 17-7 midway through the set and never looked back, overwhelming Hope 25-10 in the end.
Despite the Royals putting up a fight in Set 4 with UH holding on to a three-point lead halfway through, the 'Bows broke away with a 10-5 run. In the final play,
Drew Durni subbed into the lineup and dished out his first career-kill for the game-winner, 25-17.
UH will take one week off before returning to MPSF action March 27 in San Diego, Calif. as the 'Bows open the series against UC San Diego.
